Schlagwerk U60 bass udu
General
Just like this Schlagwerk example, the original udus are made using clay and shape a unique, deep tonal character. The udu is traditionally played to accompany the ceremonies of the Igbo tribe in Nigeria and, after a little practice, can be played to produce a surprising range of sounds.
Features of the Schlagwerk U60 Bass Udu
Since this bass udu is a modern variation of the original Nigerian udu, it's played by striking the top sound hole with the palm of the hand so that the sudden displacement of air inside the 'jug' (since these were originally used as jugs) produces the tone. While this sounds simple, the way that the sound hole on the side of the neck is blocked directly effects the pitch, so some technique is needed to get the best out of this unique percussive instrument. This is the larger bass udu, and measures 55cm high and has a 36cm diameter.
